With a short notice change to our scheduled speaker, Andy Lakin-Hall our Assistant Charity Manager stepped in to fill the slot on Monday 10th June 2013 with an updated account of his hobby - Water Rockets.
Andy builds his rockets from old fizzy-drink bottles, and powers them with water and air pumped in with a bicycle pump up to about 100psi. This creates a very pleasing whoosh effect as they launch up around two to three hundred feet in the air, before floating down gently on a parachute.
Andy showed us how rockets are made from recycled materials, and how he has used the internet to find out about rockets, how to use radio control systems and programmable micro-controllers and even how to sew his own parachutes.
As part of the Rotherfield Summer Fayre this year, Andy is organising a repeat of the Water Rocket Challenge, where people are invited to make their own water rockets to launch in a competition to see whose rocket can go the furthest. Details about this can be found on the Summer Fayre Website.
We finished the afternoon outside on the football field with some exciting rocket launches which everyone enjoyed very much. A real spectacle!
