January 2013 Report

Well, we are back in full swing here at Rotherfield St Martin. All activities have commenced and many are being developed and expanded.

We started the year with a ‘New Year Get Together’ giving folks time to catch up and share their news. We also had a Bring & Buy Sale which raised some funds for us.

Sarah, Richard, Pater and Louise - London 2012 Olympic Volunteers. 14 Jan 2012
We then had a superb presentation from four ‘Games Makers’ about their experiences volunteering for the Olympic Games. Sarah had been a driver, Richard had been with a team who prevented illegal advertising at the Olympic Park, Peter had been at the ticket entrance directing people through the detectors, and Louise had been a team leader. They were so enthusiastic and obviously very proud to have been selected. We had a wonderful display of photos and Peter donated some of his uniform for a raffle. It was a brilliant afternoon. Unfortunately we had to cancel the meeting with Jane Heywood who was coming to take an hour of gentle exercise and stretching. This will now be at a later date. The last meeting with Maria Graves from ‘Steps’ will be reported in the next edition

February’s diary is very full. Many of our activities are so well supported that we are having to offer further sessions. This applies to Table Tennis & Older and Active. Attendance at Bridge is also growing so we are also looking to expand this.

The exercise programme at Freedom Leisure has got off to a very good start with some 35 people attending. Again we are in talks with the manager to see if we can fit in another session.

We are delighted to have the use of the new hydro therapy pool at Grove Park on the Beacon Community College Site. We had a session before Christmas which was much enjoyed by those who went. We are now running a pilot scheme till Easter to see what the response is. Please see separate advert in this edition.

We are very pleased to announce that Jo Evans our Charity Manager was awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours List. Jo started thinking about and planning the project 12 years ago and from a very tiny seed Rotherfield St Martin has now grow into a vibrant and respected charity which is making such a difference to the lives of older people in this community and further afield. Jo feels that the honour is not only for her, but for the charity and especially for the community which has been so supportive of the work of RSM.
