March at Rotherfield St Martin

We are pleased to report another great month at RSM.

On the 4th of March we had a really interesting talk from Daphne Bagshawe about her experiences on the magistrates’ bench. Contrasting with this we all had a chance to meet Liz Wright, who has set up the Coco Angel shop opposite St Denys’ Church, selling delicious handmade chocolates from Bruges, as well as all sorts of crafts and gifts. Do drop in and browse if you’ve not been to visit before. With Easter rapidly approaching as I write, we are looking forward to our regular Easter Bonnet show on Monday 25th March, where we always have a lovely selection of hats on display.
As our membership increases we held an afternoon tea for new members on the 6th March. Our Befrienders were on hand to welcome everyone, and it was good to meet all these new friends. We also held a coffee morning in aid of Comic Relief on Red Nose Day, March 15th, with a raffle, jokes and a big box of red noses. The centre was buzzing with laughter and conversation and the event was loads of fun.

The number of requests for volunteer drives has jumped over the last couple of months and, with a couple of snow days, we were hard pushed as hospitals changed appointments at short notice. Huge thanks goes to all our fantastic volunteer drivers, who give their time and cars to help our members get to their appointments. We are always looking for more volunteer drivers, so if you could help with an occasional drive – even once a month, then that would be tremendously helpful.

Our exercise provision continues with a full programme of events for a wide range of ability. We have Zumba on alternate Tuesdays and our really successful Exercise class at Freedom Leisure on Wednesdays. Older and Active sessions with Una Wareham now happen every Thursday, alternating weekly sessions both standing, and from the chair. Yoga sessions, which are really great for general flexibility, continue on alternate Friday mornings. Our Hydrotherapy sessions at the Beacon pool have proved really popular and beneficial, and these will continue throughout April. Table Tennis became so popular that we now do weekly sessions – one week on a Tuesday afternoon, one week on Friday. There is something for everyone to try, and all these activities welcome newcomers to come and have a go – just contact the RSM Centre for full details or to book a place.
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Miss Samantha Dahman as manager for our Charity Shop which will be opening in April. Samantha comes with a wealth of retail experience and charity shop work and is already busy planning to make RSM Charity Shop a real community place within the village. Watch out for posters in the village about the opening. We will be needing volunteers to help Samantha so if you are interested and feel able to give a couple of hours a month, please call the office on 01892 853021. We are also looking for a couple of mannequins and a tall bookcase!

The April Diary is full of fun and games! You will find it here in the magazine. Please note Jo’s Investiture on April 29th. An invitation is extended to RSM members but places are limited. Please see notice.

Just a future note for your diaries, the Rotherfield Summer Fayre will be on Saturday 20th July this year. We have pitches available for local organisations, groups and individuals, and anyone interested in having a stall or attraction at the fayre is welcome to contact me at the RSM Centre. There are full details on our new Summer Fayre website at, or contact the RSM Centre on our normal number 01892 853021.
